The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has moved to 24-hour gate operations at Tema Port, extending what had previously been a daytime-only schedule in an effort to reduce truck queues that have at times stretched several kilometres along the Accra-Tema motorway.
Terminal operators say the extended hours allow haulage companies to collect containers overnight, spreading demand more evenly across the day instead of concentrating pickups in a narrow morning window. Early data from the port authority suggests average truck turnaround time inside the gate has fallen, though queuing on the approach roads remains a separate challenge tied to city traffic rather than port capacity.
The change comes as Tema continues to handle a growing share of transshipment cargo bound for Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, all of which rely on the port as their principal sea gateway. GPHA officials said further investment in off-dock container yards is planned to keep pace with volume growth.
